What I would recommend for new exchange students is to join a club, circle or association at the university. Making japanese friends as well as international friends is important, and by joining a club you can create a stronger bond with the members than by just meeting people at parties. It is a good social opportunity and can help you when you are in trouble. For instance, I recently had to use a phone to call for an important matter. A japanese friend was kind enough to lend her phone to me, and even to take part in the conversation when my understanding was not enough. These kind of situations are not likely to happen in your home country, but it is hugely reassuring to know that you have people you can count on in a foreign country like Japan, as well as good and long-lasting friends"
