The Japan-Korea Students Exchange Seminar was held during August 21-25, 2010 in Kyoto and Kobe. 39 participants from 16 university co-ops in Japan and Korea joined the event and exchanged views in this seminar.
The participants visited Kagawa Memorial Hall in Kobe and heard an explanation from the museum director Mr. Tokuaki Kagawa about the origin and meaning of co-operative movement in Japan. Afterwards, they visited Center for Disaster Reduction of Kobe City and learned about the damage and reconstruction process of the Great Hanshin Earthquake in 1995. In Kyoto, the participants took part in a tour of Kyoto history.
They also visited university co-ops in Kobe University, Ritsumeikan University, Doshisha University, Kyoto Institute of Technology and Kyoto University. The participants observed co-op stores in Japan and had a discussion on the development course of university co-ops in each country

National Federation of University Co-operative Associations (NFUCA) attended the 2010 European Forum for Student Affairs on September 30th – October 2nd, 2010 in Padua, Italy on the kind invitation of German National Association for Student Affairs (Deutsches Studentenwerk/DSW). NFUCA has received a request to report on student support in Japan and the role of university co-operatives. The forum was hosted by National Association of Institutes for the Right to University Education (ANDISU), which is the umbrella organization of Italian organizations responsible for student affairs.
On the first day, after the opening ceremony which took place in Palazzo della Ragione, President of NFUCA Prof. Kokichi Shoji gave a presentation entitled “A Scenario for the Development and Management of Student Support” at the Round Table session. Prof. Shoji talked about the current state of higher education in Japan, various issues in student support and the role university co-operatives should play.
On the second day, NFUCA General Director & CEO Toshiaki Wada delivered a presentation on “Relationship between Japanese Universities and Local Communities, and Role of University Co-operatives” in the Focus session themed “Student Affairs and University Town,” which was held in Palazzo S. Stefano.
On the last day, European Council for Student Affairs (ECStA) held their General Assembly, which was attended by around 30 representatives from student affairs organizations from each country. At the opening, ECStA President Mr. Norberto Tonini gave a brief introduction of NFUCA, which was followed by greetings from Prof. Shoji to the audience. The action policy approved by the General Assembly confirmed that a meeting on student affairs targeted at all European countries (including Eastern Europe) shall be held in June or July 2011 in Berlin.

ICA Asia and the Pacific Workshop on University/Campus Co-operatives was held in Yogyakarta, Indonesia on June 22-24, 2010. This workshop was hosted by ICA Asia and the Pacific where Prof. Kokichi Shoji, President of National Federation of University Co-operative Associations (NFUCA), serves as its chairman. There were around 100 participants from 9 countries (Japan, South Korea, Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, India and Indonesia).
In response to the adopted communiqué at 2009 UNESCO World Conference on Higher Education, it was decided that the theme of this workshop would be “Campus Co-op: Meeting New Challenges of Higher Education.” The workshop began with opening remarks from Prof. Shoji, which was followed by talks from UNESCO Jakarta Office, Ministry of Education-Republic of Indonesia, Asia Pacific Student Affairs Council, ICA Regional Office of Asia and the Pacific and NFUCA.
Through the introduction of university co-ops from each country and group discussion, the participants did not only discuss about the development and growth of university co-ops, but also engaged in the discussion about how university co-ops can contribute to the development of higher education in each country. The participants also visited university co-operatives in Indonesia and planted memorial trees. The adoption of resolutions and declarations ended the workshop.

On July 5th, 2010, National Federation of University Co-operative Associations (NFUCA) exchanged a memorandum with German National Association for Student Affairs (Deutsches Studentenwerk/DSW) to work cooperatively towards the improvement of student services. Prof. Kokichi Shoji, President of NFUCA, and Achim Meyer auf der Heyde, Secretary General of DSW, signed the Memorandum of Understanding.
NFUCA and DSW have been maintaining mutual exchange relationships for more than 10 years and have recognized common goals in terms of service delivery and livelihood support to students.
In UNESCO’s 2009 World Conference on Higher Education, the adopted communiqué outlines an action plan that “Member States, working in collaboration with all stakeholders, should develop policies and strategies at system and institutional levels” to “ensure active student participation in academic life, with freedom of expression and the right of organisation, and provide adequate student services.”
In response to this communiqué, NFUCA and DSW exchanged Memorandum of Understanding aimed at enriching student services.
