At the Scene of Increasingly Global Student Affairs in Higher Education From 2011 NASPA Annual Conference

On March 12 -16, National Federation of University Co-operative Associations (NFUCA) attended the 2011 NASPA Annual Conference in Philadelphia. NASPA (Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education) is a professional association of student affairs in higher education with members in 1,400 campuses representing 29 countries, centered in the United States. NFUCA participated as an association which provide student services in collaboration with universities.

At the NASPA International Symposium, which was held prior to the annual conference, professionals from around the world gathered to discuss the transformation in higher education, challenges and roles of student affairs and other issues.

Europe is in the process of creating a large-scale integration in higher education called European Higher Education Area under a reform course known as Bologna Process. German National Association for Student Affairs (DSW) reported the current situation on Bologna Process, changes in students and responses from universities. A topic covering challenges in providing student services in different cultures was raised by an American university, which has begun to operate in Middle East countries.

NASPA has been offering programs to improve the level of performance and skills of people working in higher education and is aiming at achieving a better campus life. There are many goals in common between NFUCA and NASPA.

By taking part in NASPA Annual Conference, we were able to make connections with organizations and people involved in student services. It also served as a good opportunity to share the existence of university co-ops in Japan as providers of student services while being a business entity, and the participation of students as our strength.
