A Visit from KOOP UTHM to UT Co-op and NFUCA

On June 23, 2023, the members of KOOP UTHM, represented by its esteemed President, Prof. Ts. Dr. Razali bin Hassan, and a group of 7 other co-op executives, embarked on a journey of exploration to the University of Tokyo Co-operative (UT Co-op) and the National Federation of University Co-operative Associations (NFUCA).

KOOP UTHM is a consumer co-operative established in 1997 at Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia. With approximately 600 faculty and staff members, the co-op engages in diverse business sectors, ranging from financial services, stores, and cafes to education and real estate.

The delegation’s first destination was the renowned UT Co-op situated on the Hongo Campus. Welcoming them with warm hospitality was Mr. Tomohiko Shibazaki, Assistant to the Executive Director of UT Co-op. Prior to commencing the tour, Mr. Shibazaki provided a concise yet insightful explanation about the University of Tokyo and UT Co-op. The briefing set the stage for a comprehensive understanding of UT Co-op’s significance.

During the tour, the KOOP UTHM delegation had the privilege to observe and experience the dynamic environment of university co-operatives in Japan. They visited various dining halls and stores, witnessing firsthand how the UT Co-op caters to the needs of the student community, faculty, and staff alike.

The tour culminated with a delightful halal lunch menu at the Central Dining Hall, reflecting the UT Co-op’s commitment to inclusivity and cultural sensitivity.

After bidding farewell to the UT Co-op, the KOOP UTHM delegation proceeded to the NFUCA Head Office, affectionately nicknamed Suginami Kaikan. The delegation received a warm reception from Mr. Ichiro Nakamori, the Managing Director and CEO of NFUCA.

The discussion with Mr. Nakamori was a valuable opportunity for both parties to engage in an exchange of knowledge and ideas. They shared insights about their respective organizations, discussing the current state and challenges pertaining to halal food in Japanese universities. Additionally, the absence of a federation of university co-operatives in Malaysia was a point of interest. Mr. Nakamori elaborated on NFUCA’s organizational structure and the comprehensive support it offers to its members.

The visit by KOOP UTHM proved to be exceptionally fruitful, generating a mutual commitment to establishing further cooperation between the institutions. Prof. Ts. Dr. Razali bin Hassan expressed his gratitude for the warm hospitality and insights gained during the visit, while Mr. Nakamori emphasized the importance of learning from international counterparts to strengthen and enhance each co-op’s services.
