We at NFUCA work on the Hibakusha Appeal
for the elimination of nuclear weapons, for the 2020 UN General Assembly.

Hibakusha are the survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 as a result of World War Ⅱ. They started the Hibakusha Appeal, a signature campaign calling for an international threat to ban and eliminate nuclear weapons in April 2016, so that future generation will not see hell on earth ever again. They have submitted the signatures for United Nation. Many people and organizations have joined this campaign. Now, the number of signatures has reached 10,517,872.

In February-March and June-July 2017, the UN Conference to Negotiate a Legally Binding Instrument to Prohibit Nuclear Weapons, Leading Towards their Total Elimination were held, and in July 7, the treaty was adopted. However, countries possessing nuclear arms and their allies, including Japan, did not join the conference. The treaty will not come into effect in a country that does not ratify it.

Hibakusha Appeal will promote ratification of the treaty and serves as a message for states with nuclear weapons and their allies. We have thought and acted with many member based on the “for better life and peace” way of thinking. We also sent delegations to Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference in 2010 and 2015, and sent messages of peace to the world. We continue to think about peace and act with more members and people all over the world for a nuclear weapon-free world.
