 　クリスマスの季節になると、毎年、見ている DVD があります。Charles Dickens 原作のDisney's A Christmas Carol です。ディズニーが、160年以上も世界中で読み継がれてきた名作を美しく完全映像化しています。その原作の魅力を、中学で学ぶ単語と文法で余すところなく語っている本があります。それが、今回ご紹介する オックスフォード大学出版局のA Christmas Carol です。

　舞台は19世紀(ヴィクトリア朝)における産業革命期のイギリス。主人公の初老Scrooge (スクルージ)おじさんは、冒頭で、次のように描写されています: The only thing that mattered to him was the business, and making money… He was a hard, clever, mean old man… There was nothing warm or open about him. He lived a secretive, lonely life, and took no interest in other people at all. The cold inside him made his eyes red, and his thin lips blue, and his voice high and cross . イタリックで示した cross という言葉は「ご機嫌斜めの、イライラした、腹を立てた、つんつんしている、怒りっぽい」という意味で、Scrooge おじさんの雰囲気を表すのにピッタリです。

　そんなScrooge おじさんの事務所に、甥がやってきます。そして、明日のクリスマスの夕食に家族・友人が集まるのでお誘いをします。すると、Scrooge おじさんは甥の“Merry(楽しい) Christmas" という言葉に対して、Why do you call it “merry" Christmas? You're too poor to be merry…what is Christmas? Just a time when you spend too much, when you find yourself a year older and not an hour richer, when you have to pay your bills. Everyone who goes around saying “Merry Christmas" should have his tongue cut out.と言い放ちます。そのような考え方に対して、甥は、I've always thought of Christmas as a time to be helpful and kind to other people. It's the only time of the year when men and women open their hearts freely to each other. And so, uncle, although I've never made any money from it, I think Christmas has been and will be a good time for me ! And I say, God bless Christmas ! と伝えます。

　Scrooge おじさんは甥からの誘いを断ります。そして、自宅に到着してドアの鍵を開けようとすると、ドアノッカーに、かつて、仕事の相棒だったJacob Marley の顔が出現します。Suddenly, to his great surprise, he saw that the knocker was not a knocker any more, but had become the face of Jacob Marley ! その後、家に入り二階に上がると、As he looked, he saw, with great surprise and fear, that the bell was slowly beginning to move from side to side. Soon it was ringing loudly, and so was every bell in the house. という現象が起きます。そして、Marleyの亡霊が重い鎖に縛られ引きずりながら出現し、生前、金銭欲に取り付かれまわりの人たちに優しく接しなかったために、穏やかな死後を迎えられず彷徨い続けていることを伝えます。I have been dead for seven years and all that time I have been travelling on the wings of the wind! No peace, no rest for me in death, because I was never good or kind in life !... Listen to me, … I am here tonight to warn you. You still have a chance to save yourself from what has happened to me.

　Marleyの亡霊は、これから3人の精霊——「過去のクリスマスの精霊」「現在のクリスマスの精霊」「未来のクリスマスの精霊」がやって来ると予言します。Three spirits will come to visit you … You will not see me any more, and for your own peace after death, remember what I have told you ! そして予言通り、3人の精霊がScrooge おじさんの「過去」→「現在」→「未来」のクリスマスの様子を映し出していきます。やがて、Scroogeおじさんは “It isn't a question of money, "replied Scrooge warmly. He was speaking like the young man he used to be, not the old man he was now. と変化していきます。この展開にグイグイと引き込まれながら、一気に物語を読み進めてしまうことでしょう。

　クリスマス・イブに、街頭で「クリスマス・キャロル(賛美歌)」を歌う人たちの声が耳障りで不快極まりなかったScrooge おじさんが、物語の最後に見せるクリスマスを祝う満面の微笑みを見て、改めて「物語」が与える生きる力を実感いたします。Merry Christmas !
