Good Things Can Happen

　前回、星新一さんの英語版ショートショートを紹介しました。そして、英語で「結末がどうなるか？」が気になりながら楽しく読み進めていける作品として皆さんにおすすめしました。今回も英語で読んでいることを忘れてしまうくらい物語の世界に引き込まれながら、結末でこころが温められ、涙ぐんでしまうイイ話が一杯入っている『こころが温まる10の短篇』を紹介します。その中のひとつ、“Good Things Can Happen （いいことってあるものだ）” は、次のような書き出しで始まります。

It was a cold winter day in St. Louis. A middle-aged woman was walking down the street. Passing by an alley, she noticed an old homeless man. He was sitting against the wall with his head hung low. His clothes were in pieces. His shoes were falling apart. The woman stopped for a moment and looked at him. The homeless man raised his head slowly and looked back at her.

　ある女性から視線を向けられたホームレスの男は「なんだよ？」と言い返し、その女性をにらみつけます。その女性は、毛皮のコートとおそろいの帽子をかぶり、彼女の指や耳の輝く宝石が、冬の鈍い陽光にきらめいています。女性は「凍えてしまうわ！ どこか暖かいところに行きましょうよ」と言い、男を引っ張り上げ立たせようとします。2人が言い争いをしていると、あるひとりの警官が「ふたりとも、どうしたんですか？」とたずねてきます。その警官は、そのホームレスのことを知っていて、「この老いぼれチャック（Chuck）はいつもがんこな男でしてね」とため息をつきます。そして、なんとかチャックを立ち上がらせ、3人は一緒に、路地から大きな通りへ出て、女性が連れて行きたい「ルー（Lou）の店」に入ります。

“No. no. no!” Lou said, rushing around the counter. “Not him! Get him out of here! I don't want to see his face again!” He was about to push Chuck and the woman out the door. Then he noticed the police officer and stopped.

“What is the meaning of this?” Lou asked. “I knew this was a bad idea...” Chuck said softly. “We’re just trying to get our friend. Chuck, a meal. If that’s alright.” the police officer said."Why here? Can’t you take him somewhere else?” Lou said.

Finally, the woman spoke. “Are you familiar with Bennett & Silverman, the law firm across the street? ” she asked Lou. “Yes. of course. A lot of their employees eat lunch here,” Lou said. He was confused. “Why?” he asked.

“Well, I’m Johanna Bennett, partner at Bennett & Silverman. So if you could please forgive us just this once. We’re hungry.” said Ms. Bennett. Lou wiped his forehead with a dishtowel. He thought for a moment.

　女性の名前はジョアンナ・ベネットといい、通りを隔ててルーの店の向かいにある法律事務所の共同経営者であることがわかります。そして、ルーが言うにはその事務所で働いている多くの人たちが昼食をとりにくる、ということです。そのため、ジョアンナの「2人で食事がしたい」という願いを断るわけにはいかなくなります。そして、2人は一緒に食事をとることができます。食事をし始めると、チャックは、“Why would you do this for someone like me? ” とジョアンナに質問します。すると、ジョアンナは、次のように話を始めます。ジョアンナの話から、物語の謎がどう解き明かされるか、本書をぜひ手にとって最後まで読んでみてください。涙ぐみながら、この物語につけられたタイトルが心に響いてくるでしょう。

“Well, it was a really long time ago. Twentyfive years ago, maybe.” she said. … Then she told her story: “It was pouring with rain. A young girl rushed into this very diner we’re sitting in right now. She was soaking wet. She had just graduated from college. She had come to the city looking for a job, but she hadn’t had any luck. She had run out of money and was kicked out of her apartment because she could no longer pay the rent.
